What is Overseeding?

Overseeding is the process of planting new grass over your existing turf, without ripping up the soil or the grass. Overseeding your lawn will help fill in bare spots, increase turf density, and improve the overall health and appearance of your lawn. We recommend implementing overseeding into your regular lawn maintenance program, as it is one of the most overlooked and most beneficial components to a healthy lawn.

Why Is Overseeding So Important?

Common bunch style cool season grasses common to our area reproduce by forming tillers alongside the crown of the plant. Over time, mature plants’ reproduction rate slows and cannot reproduce new tillers fast enough to replace older dying leaves. Did you know the average lifespan of a blade of grass is only a month or two? Because of this overseeding is integral to maintaining a young, healthy lawn that is self-sustaining. Introducing new and improved turgrass varieties will also help the lawn tolerate drought stress and make it more resistant to insect and disease damage. Young turf, through regular overseeding, will be a healthier, thicker and greener lawn.

How Lawnpro can help

Lawnpro implements two methods for overseeding a lawn. The first is core aerating your lawn in conjunction with broadcast spreading seed. The other is slice seeding. Our technicians can determine the need for overseeding as well as the proper method to be used. In either case, we will apply the appropriate seed type at the correct rate given the circumstances and environmental conditions of your lawn. We can also advise proper post-seeding practices in order to help you achieve a thicker, healthier lawn that you can be proud of!
